Who Takes Care of the Caregiver?

Caregivers have the very important job of ensuring the health and well-being of others, but who’s making sure the caregivers maintain their own physical, mental, and emotional health? Who takes care of the caregiver?

If you’ve ridden on a commercial airplane, you’ll remember the flight attendant’s suggestion of putting on your own oxygen mask during emergencies before attempting to help others with their masks. This action is not selfish. It ensures your own safety first, so that you can help others if needed.

Likewise, if you’re at home caring for a spouse or family member, it’s important to prioritize your own health. Again, this action is not selfish. While maintaining your own wellness greatly benefits you individually, it also creates a strong foundation from which you can provide more effective and compassionate care for your loved one at home.

So, who takes care of the caregiver? YOU do! If you leave it to someone else and rely on hope to get it done, then caregiver burnout will be waiting around the corner for you. Take excellent care of yourself!
